A strong gargle made from boiling a couple tablespoons of seeds in a quart of water and strained, is used as a home remedy to soothe sore throat.

Ancient herbalists used fenugreek as a digestive aid, and even today the seeds are eaten with a little yogurt to relieve diarrhea and flatulence. Fenugreek in any form helps with acid reflux. Fenugreek tea is also used for treating other stomach disorders such as peptic ulcers as the seeds become mucilageous (have a mucus coating) in water and soothe the stomach.

Fenugreek seeds have long been known to promote lactation. In India, the seeds are powdered and made into a gruel and offered to nursing mothers. The seeds are crushed and fed to cows to increase their supply of milk.

In the Middle Ages, fenugreek was used as a hair tonic and was believed to cure baldness. Herbalists recommend making a paste of the leaves and applying over the scalp regularly before shampooing, for long, silky, and glossy hair, and for curing dandruff. The paste, when applied on the face, can improve complexion and prevent pimples, acne, blackheads, as well as wrinkles.

Fenugreek seeds are rich source of minerals, vitamins, and phytonutrients.

The seeds are very good source of soluble dietary fiber. Soaking the seeds in water makes their outer coat soft and mucilaginous. 100 g of seeds provide 24.6 g or over 65% of dietary fiber.

Non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) which constitute major fiber content in the fenugreeks includesaponins, hemicelluloses, mucilage, tannin, and pectin. These compounds help lower blood LDL-cholesterol levels by inhibiting bile salts re-absorption in the colon. They also bind to toxins in the food and helps to protect the colon mucus membrane from cancers.

NSPs (non-starch polysaccharides) increase the bulk of the food and augments bowel movements. Altogether, NSPs assist in smooth digestion and help relieve constipation ailments.

It has been established that amino-acid 4-hydroxy isoleucine present in the fenugreek seeds has facilitator action on insulin secretion. Uses & Benefits of Cedarwood

The bark of cedarwood proves to be a good remedy in remittent and intermittent fevers, diarrhea and dysentery. The powder is used in the treatment of ulcers.

The inner wood of the plant is aromatic and is thus, used to make incense. The inner wood is also distilled to make essential oils.

The essential oil obtained from this plant is used as insect repellant on the feet of horses, cattle and camels, as insects avoid venturing close to it.

The outer bark and stem of the tree are used for making astringent.

The biomedical actions of the plant are believed to be carminative and antispasmodic. It creates sweating and urination.

The Ayurvedic functions of the plant promote digestive function, remove toxins from the bowel, alleviate coughing, and cure skin disorders, such as eczema and psoriasis.

As it possesses aromatic properties, cedar oil is often used in aromatherapy. It has a characteristic woody whiff, which can change slightly in the course of drying out.

Healing Power and Curative Properties of Cassia

Nearly all parts of the tree have medicinal properties. The fruits are, however, most important and are included in the Indian Pharmaceutical Codex.


The pulp from the fruits, called cassia pulp, is a well-known laxative, and is used in the treatment of Constipation. It can be safely taken even by children and expectant mothers. About 50 grams of the pulp is soaked in water overnight. It is then strained in the morning and taken with 25 grams of sugar.

The pulp of cassia is a mild, pleasant and safe purgative. Approximately four grams of the pulp is taken with an equal quantity of sugar or tamarind. As a purgative, 30 to 60 grams are required, but this quantity may cause colic, nausea and flatulence. It is therefore generally used in combination with other drugs, preferably in mixture with the leaves of senna, botanically known as cassia angustifolia.

Common Cold

The root of the tree is useful in common cold. in case of running nose, smoke from the burning root can be inhaled. It encourages a copious nasal discharge and provides relief.


The root of the tree is a tonic and useful in reducing fever. An alcoholic extract of the root-bark is used for black water fever.

Intestinal Disorders

For children suffering from flatulence, the cassia pulp can be applied around the navel to ensure evacuation. Mixed with linseed or almond oil, it can be massaged on the stomach for easing the bowel movements.


The pulp of cassia is very useful in ageusia or loss of sense of taste due to excessive use of opium or cocaine. About 24 grams of the pulp is mixed with a quarter liter of hot milk and used as a mouthwash to treat this syndrome.

Skin Disorders

The leaves of the tree are useful in relieving irritation of the skin and in alleviating swellings and pains. Their juice or paste serves as a useful dressing for ringworm and inflammation of the hands or feet caused by exposure to cold. They also relieve dropsical swellings due to excessive accumulation of fluid in the body tissue. Its leaves can be rubbed beneficially on affected parts for relief from rheumatism and facial paralysis.



The leaves of Camellia sinensis which is an evergreen shrub are used to make green tea. The green tea is being used in china since 5000 year. The green tea, black tea and oolong tea is also made from the same plant.

The green tea is largely grown in Sri Lanka and India. The use of tea is basically for alert purposes during long medication and is served as part of various ceremonies. There is story about the Prince Siddhartha Gautama who is the founder of Buddhism that he tore off his eyelids when he was unable to stay awake during meditation. The place where eyelids fell sprouted the tea plants which enable him to stay awake and help him to meditate and reach enlightenment. The team was introduced in the Western culture in the 6th century by the Turkish traders.


  • Anxiety

    The green tea has L-theanin which is predominant amino acids and it has effects on the induced anxiety as compared with prescription drug alprazolam.

  • Arthritis

    The inflammation is reduced with the Arthritis found in green tea which slows down the cartilage breakdown but still there is need of more studies.

  • Asthma

    There is caffeine in the green tea which improves the airflow to the lungs but still it is not clear about the benefits of green tea or caffeine to the asthma as there is need of more research for strong conclusion.

  • Cancer

    There is no conclusion made about the relationship between green tea and human cancer but still there are some benefits found using green tea for the treatment of prostate cancer hormones. The recommendations will be made after further research.

  • Cardiovascular Conditions

    There can be reduced risks of heart attack or atherosclerosis with regular intake of green tea. The clinical trails are required before making any recommendations.

  • Common prevention

    The green tea can be very good in prevention of cold and flu symptoms. There is need of further clinical trails to confirm these results.

  • Dental Cavity prevention

    The study is made about the green tea for mouthwash to prevent dental cavities but its benefits are not clear yet.

  • Diabetes

    There is need of more study about the benefits of green tea in the prevention or treatment of diabetes.

  • Fertility

    The use of green tea with the combination of the Fertility Blend is very good for the women to conceive. The research is being made for the use of green tea alone for making any conclusion.

    The green tea can be used as protective agent of skin from ultraviolet rays. But there is no clear research about the effects of green tea on skin damage caused by sun.

  • Viral Infection

    The viral infection with HTLV-1 is decreased by the green tea but there is need of well designed controlled research before making recommendation.

  • Weight loss

    You can use green tea extract capsule for the weight loss or weight maintenance but study results are mixed and there is need of better research.


  • Weight loss (maintenance)

    There are several small human studies addressing the use of green tea extract (GTE) capsules for weight loss or weight maintenance in overweight or average weight individuals. Study results are mixed. Better research is needed before a strong recommendation can be made in this area


The recipe for this traditional herbal supplement dates back thousands of years and is referenced in the traditional Indian texts the Charak and Sushrut Samhitas. Triphala is considered a 'tridoshic rasayan', having balancing and rejuvenating effects on the three constitutional elements that govern human life: Vata which regulates the nervous system, Pitta which maintains metabolic processes, and Kapha which supports structural integrity.

Some of the most popular herbal remedies in the health supplement departments are those which 'cleanse' by promoting bowel movement. A reason is that one of the most common problems among many individuals is constipation and bowel irregularity. This can lead to poorer general digestion and liver function, less vitality and perhaps even less optimism and an overall poorer outlook and quality of life. Sound like a panacea? Well, it may be just about that. Triphala is the most popular Ayurvedic herbal formula of India partly because it is an effective laxative which also supports the body's vitality. The constitution of vegetarian Hindus cannot tolerate harsh laxatives anymore than vegetarians in other countries. Because of its high nutritional value, Triphala is considered to uniquely cleanse and detoxify at the deepest organic levels without depleting the body's reserves. This may make it one of the most valuable herbal preparations in the world. 

How is triphala different from other kinds of laxatives? There are three primary types of herbal laxatives, sometimes overlapping in even one plant. The first type is more irritating and draining while the other two are more lubricating and nourishing.

The strongest (yet also potentially most harsh) type is called the purgative and includes herbs such as senna, rhubarb, buckthorn, coffeeberry and cascara. These often contain bitter principles in the form of anthroquinones which work by stimulating the peristaltic action of the intestinal lining or by promoting the secretion of bile through the liver and gall bladder. The tasting of the bitterness induces many other beneficial digestive secretions as well. Entire schools of herbalism in both the east and the west have been largely devoted to this bitter purgative road leading to the goal of detoxification.

The second type of laxative is a lubricating, oily or moist laxative and includes oils and seeds of hemp or sesame and the kernals of various members of the 'stone-fruit' genus Prunus such as Apricot, Peach, and Bush Cherry. Oils cause the gallbladder to secrete bile (in healthy people) which can enhance digestion as well. These items are more nourishing in general than the purgatives, but more care is needed in their use than in the last type. Castor oil is in this oily group but castor seed also has irritating properties (which are largely purified in making the oil) which are more purgative. Flax gives both the lubricating oil and another type of compound in the seed which brings us to the last type of laxative, a very thick topic indeed.

The third type is the soluble fiber or mucilaginous bulk laxative, including demulcent substances such as psyllium seed, marshmallow root, irish moss, guar gum and flax seed. This is more purely nutritional and local in action and usually does not have any significant direct effect on either the liver or the gall bladder. Rather, these materials work like a sponge by swelling and absorbing fluid, thus acting as an intestinal broom.

Triphala combines both nutritional as well as blood and liver cleansing (detoxifying) actions. It has little function as a local demulcent but is more of a lubricating source of nourishment and also possesses some bitter anthroquinones which help stimulate bile flow and peristalsis. The nutritional aspect is partly in the form of its bioflavonoids, high vitamin C content and the presence of linoleic oil, phospholipids and other important nutrients which it makes more of a tonic.

Typically, people who are in need of purgatives are those whose bowel irregularity is caused by liver and gall bladder congestion. An 'excess' or heated pitta type may benefit from this type the most directly as well.

Those in need of oily or demulcent laxatives are those with intestinal dryness caused by a variety of metabolic factors including dietary and nutritional deficiencies as well as conditions of metabolism. The oily ones may be better for vata ( and some 'deficient' ) types in general and the milder demulcents for anyone really but particularly for kapha (or 'damp') types, who may not do well with 'cold' or oily herbs. As mentioned, triphala does well for all these types. Triphala has strength as well as gentleness and versatility. It will prove useful for all kinds of constipation except that caused by a lack of vital energy (or 'qi'). Even for the latter type, it will not further deplete such an individual and can be made to work well if it is combined with other qi, blood or yang-warming tonic herbs such as ginseng for qi tonification, tang kuei for blood tonification and prepared aconite for yang tonification. 

Herbal healing is largely a matter of strategy. One approach may emphasize tonification while another emphasizes elimination. The problem with overemphasizing tonification is that it can lead to further stagnation and congestion in an excess condition. Emphasizing elimination through the overuse of purgatives in an already deficient individual can further deplete the body's store of minerals and essential B vitamins as well as create an imbalance of beneficial intestinal micro-organisms. The result is weakness with a likely tendency towards chronic fatigue and anemia. Since the body is always simultaneously involved with maintaining and gaining strength through good nutrition as well as eliminating waste, triphala is unique in that it is naturally able to support both vital processes simultaneously. 

Because of its high nutritional content, Ayurvedic doctors generally do not regard Triphala as a mere laxative. Some of the scientific research and practical experience of people using it down through the ages has demonstrated that triphala is an effective blood purifier that stimulates bile secretion as it detoxifies the liver, helps digestion and assimilation, and significantly reduces serum cholesterol and lipid levels throughout body. As a result, it is regarded as a kind of universal panacea and is the most commonly prescribed herbal formula. A popular folk saying in India is, "No mother? Do not worry so long as you have triphala." One reason is that Indian people believe triphala is able to care for the internal organs of the body as a mother cares for her children, nourishing like a mothers milk and cleaning like her gentle hand. Each of the three herbal fruits of triphala takes care of the body by improving digestion and assimilation while gently promoting internal cleansing of all conditions of stagnation and excess.

The name 'Triphala' means 'three fruits'.

The three fruits of triphala (Harada, Amla and Bihara) each correspond to the "three humours" or "tridosha" of Indian Ayurvedic medicine. According to Ayurvedic theory, the body is composed of three doshas or humours. Vata is sometimes translated as "wind" which corresponds to the mind and nervous system. Its nature is dry, cold, light and activating. The second is pitta which is also translated as "fire" or "bile." It is responsible for all metabolic transformations including the digestion and assimilation of food as well as assimilation and clarity of thought and understanding. The nature of pitta is primarily hot, moist and light. Kapha is sometimes translated as the "water" or "mucus" humour and is responsible for all anabolic or building functions such as the development of muscle and bone tissue. Its nature is cool, moist and heavy.
